At the request of outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a military band will perform “You Forgot the Color Film”, a 1974 East German hit, at Thursday’s ceremony marking the end of her 16 years in office. Check out this YouTube link of Nina Hagen’s original version of the song. Hagen left East Germany in 1976 following the expulsion of her father and established herself as a punk artist in the West. Although the song cleared East German censors, The Guardian reports that it had an anti-government subtext.
