The UK Daily Mail reports that raccoons, which are not native to Europe, were released into the wild while Hermann Goering was in charge of forestry and nature conservation. Since then they have proliferated and become pests, sometimes destructive.
There are other instances reported of their release into the wild. Among them: they escaped from confinement when allied bombs hit a breeding farm. (Their pelts were a commodity.)
